Cosy bistro in Edinburgh’s Old Town

Serving classic French dishes, the Bistro at Hotel du Vin is tucked away off Bristo Place in Edinburgh’s atmospheric Old Town. It is a cosy, welcoming space with restored fireplaces, reclaimed floorboards and lots of wine merchant memorabilia.

Service is polished but informal and the sommelier is always happy to advise anyone in need of a little friendly guidance around the 200 plus bin list. The Bistro’s courtyard – complete with cigar bothy and heaters – is a hidden gem which is well worth seeking out in the sunnier months.

Well-loved French bistro dishes

Classic French bistro dishes such as cassoulet, steak frites and roast cod on Puy lentils take pride of place on the a la carte menu. The emphasis is on simple dishes, done well, using good quality ingredients.

A seasonal prix fixe menu changes every three months while a selection of gourmet sandwiches, omelettes and other egg dishes offer lighter alternatives for those looking for a quick bite. Dry-aged steaks and the mighty HdV burger add more carnivorous choices. The epic Sunday brunch is popular with families and couples keen to enjoy a lavish spread without facing the washing-up.

Old Town location

The Bistro is part of Hotel du Vin on Bristo Place in Edinburgh’s Old Town. It is around a brisk ten minute walk from Waverley train station and frequent buses to and from the city centre pass the restaurant. Nearby attractions include the Festival Theatre. There are no car parking spaces at the hotel but there is a Q Car Park at nearby Quartermile.
