Family-run city centre Italian restaurant

La Lanterna was established in 1970 and is one of Glasgow’s oldest family-run Italian restaurants and is at the bottom of Hope Street in the city centre. With a history of serving high quality Italian cuisine, La Lanterna has maintained this reputation with its authentic cooking and excellent service. The basement restaurant evokes a Mediterranean ambiance with its warm tones and exposed ceiling beams, allowing guests to leave the hustle and bustle of Hope Street and momentarily feel as though they’ve escaped to warmer climes.

Freshly prepared, homemade cuisine

Focus is on the food at La Lanterna and since fresh ingredients are used in their dishes, the menus do change with the seasons. Some featured dishes may include the Italian favourite minestrone alla Genovese (a traditional soup with vegetables and pasta); the cannelloni alla sorrentina (oven-baked crepes with mincemeat and spinach in a cheese & tomato sauce); or the halibut alla fiorentina (fillet of halibut on cream potatoes with sauté spinach and served with a cheese sauce gratin).

The homemade pasta dishes are a hit with regular customers, particularly the rigatoni con filetto e salsiccia (short pasta with sliced fillet steak, Italian sausage and wild mushrooms). Some diners have confessed though that it is the restaurant’s own ‘tiramisu Lanterna’ dessert that keeps them coming back for more.

Beside Central Station, other city centre transport links

La Lanterna is on Hope Street across from Central train station, and also has bus stops and taxi ranks adjacent to the restaurant. Queen Street train station is a 10 minute stroll from La Lanterna, with Buchanan Street and St. Enoch Subway stations also a short distance away.
